Safe and Sound
What Is the Safe and Sound Protocol?
The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a gentle, evidence-informed listening intervention that helps your nervous system return to a state of safety and connection. Based on Polyvagal Theory—developed by neuroscientist Dr. Stephen Porges (2022)—SSP works with the vagus nerve, the body’s “safety switch,” to calm defensive responses and improve social engagement, regulation, and emotional well-being.
At our counseling practice in The Woodlands, Texas, we offer the Safe and Sound Protocol both in person and online throughout Texas to help clients rebuild trust in their bodies and relationships. Whether you’re recovering from trauma, chronic stress, or long-standing anxiety, this process provides a pathway toward feeling truly safe again.
Why “Safety” Matters in Healing
As Porges (2022) explains, the nervous system continually scans for cues of safety or danger. When trauma or chronic stress interrupts that process, we can remain “stuck” in states of fight, flight, or freeze—even long after the threat has passed. The Safe and Sound Protocol offers a structured, compassionate way to help your body rediscover what safety feels like.
You don’t have to relive painful memories to begin healing. Through calming sound frequencies designed to engage the social nervous system, the Safe and Sound Protocol helps restore balance so that deeper therapeutic work—whether EMDR, talk therapy, or mindfulness—becomes easier and more effective.
How the Safe and Sound Protocol Works
- Listening for Regulation: You’ll listen to specially filtered music through comfortable headphones. The frequencies are designed to stimulate the middle-ear muscles that respond to the frequencies of the human voice—subtly teaching your body that connection is safe again.
- Gentle, Gradual Integration: The full program typically involves about five hours of listening spread across several sessions. We move slowly and check in often to ensure your comfort and readiness at every step.
- A Growing Field of Research: The Safe and Sound Protocol continues to be studied for its impact on trauma and stress recovery. A registered clinical trial (NCT07219056) is currently investigating the protocol’s effects in adults with trauma and substance-use disorders, reflecting the growing scientific interest in its use beyond developmental or sensory challenges.
What You Might Notice
- A deeper sense of calm and groundedness
- Reduced anxiety and emotional reactivity
- Easier connection in relationships
- Greater capacity for self-compassion
- Improved sleep and concentration
As summarized by the Trauma Research Foundation (2022), early studies and clinical observations suggest the Safe and Sound Protocol may improve emotional regulation, reduce physiological reactivity, and enhance readiness for talk-based therapy by fostering a state of safety in the body.
